Silver is a white lustrous malleable metal - one of the
most widely used metals in the world. It is very soft in
its purest state and as such is not considered very ideal
for setting stones. It's as soft as gold, actually. That
is why silver is generally alloyed with another metal, usually
copper. Silver has been mined and worked into an endless
variety of useful and decorative items. It remains the more
preferred metal as it is available aplenty compared to gold
or silver and as such is cheaper.
Pure silver is too soft to be fashioned into strong, durable,
and serviceable utensils also since it tarnishes easily
it is not very suitable for setting precious stones. Therefore,
a way was found to give silver the required degree of hardness
by adding alloys of copper and nickel.
Silver is known to mankind since Pre-Historical times. The
Egyptians considered gold to be a perfect metal, and gave
it the symbol of a circle. Since silver was the closest
to gold in perfection, it was given the symbol of a semi-circle.
Silver has some antibiotical properties due to which almost
till 1930 it was used by doctors as an antibiotic. Silver's
value has always been above materialistic and economic considerations.
Silver gifts have been given in some cultures as a symbol
of love, trust, faithfulness, excellence and wisdom.
Although silver is relatively scarce still it is more plentiful
than other metals and is the least expensive of other precious
metals.
